'Hit-run cabbie' appears in court

A TAXI driver charged over a hit-and-run accident that left a young woman critically injured has appeared briefly in a Sydney court.

Stuart Russell Graham, 55, of Gymea, faced Sutherland Local Court today charged over the incident in Sydney's south.

Shortly after 3am on February 20 this year, Jenny Franco, 23, and a male friend got out of a taxi in Gwawley Pde at Miranda and began to cross the road when she was struck by the taxi and dragged 150m.

Graham failed to stop at the scene, police told the court.

Ms Franco has been operated on at least 20 times since the accident, in which she lost her left eye and sustained other injuries.

After numerous public appeals, Graham was arrested on May 30 and charged with four offences including dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm and failing to stop and assist after a vehicle impact causing grievous bodily harm. He has not entered a plea.

The charges have been adjourned to Downing Centre District Court on August 21.
