Carey, girlfriend and a cabbie
AFL love rat Wayne Carey and his latest girlfriend Kate Nielson have left a Sydney cabbie out of pocket after a boozy end to a four-day holiday for the controversial couple.
Despite posing sweetly for the cameras when Confidential caught up with the pair at Melbourne airport yesterday, the picture painted by one annoyed taxi driver - left with a $50 bill - is in stark contrast.
The Taxis Combined cabbie says he ferried Carey's girlfriend from Hugo's bar in Kings Cross at 2.30am on Monday morning to the Hotel Intercontinental where Carey, as Neilson told the driver, had apparently returned an hour earlier following a lovers' tiff.
Neilson confirmed when her credit cards failed to work at a number of ATMs and without any cash, the one-time grid girl found herself locked out of the couple's hotel room, unable to raise her fare - or Carey for help.
"The room wasn't in her name so the hotel staff wouldn't give her a key," the driver, who did not wish to be named, said.
"She was getting really upset, screaming at them, using the `f' word, to the point where the night manager said he'd call the police."
The cabbie left Neilson in the hotel lobby but took her details and Carey's mobile phone number as surety.
Carey responded to the taxi driver's text message with a call at 8.20am yesterday but made no plans to settle the debt before the couple's flight home to Melbourne.
"There were no apologies, no concern, he was indifferent," he said.
Carey refused to comment when contacted by Confidential, while Neilson claimed he "was asleep" during the ordeal.
"I eventually got in and we spent the night together, so there's really no drama," she said.
