Taxi fares to rise

Victorian taxi fares will increase by just over one per cent this weekend.

The State Government has approved the rise in line with recommendations from the Essential Services Commission.

The flag fall cost will remain the same, but the cost per kilometre will increase by 11 cents.

The Victorian Taxi Association says the latest increase in fares makes Victorian taxi drivers the worst paid in Australia.

The Association's Neil Sach says drivers wanted a five per cent increase and are unlikely to benefit from the change.

"If you live in a country town your average trip which is four kilometres the fare is likely to go up eight cents," he said.

"But because of the way it works it won't go up at all, it won't register anything less than a 10 cent change," Mr Sach said.
