A 56-year-old Noble Park man who was hit by a taxi at Melbourne Airport yesterday has died.

The man died at 5.10am (AEST) today in the Royal Melbourne Hospital from injuries received during yesterday's incident.

Police believe the man was walking in the taxi holding area at the airport when he stepped in front of a taxi pulling into a parking space about 8.45am yesterday.

The man apparently hit the ground after being struck by the car at slow speed, causing head and chest injuries, police said.

The taxi driver raised the alarm and the man was taken to hospital.

Police would like to hear from anyone who may have been in or near the taxi holding area at the time the man was hit.

No charges have been laid.

The death bring this year's Victorian road toll to 226, nine fewer than this time last year.
