Dry zone laws may prompt cabbies to rethink trips

Alice Springs taxi drivers are warning they may refuse to carry passengers who have alcohol and want to travel to a town camp.

The manager of Alice Springs Taxis, Tony Habib, says under the dry zone laws, drivers will have to drop off passengers carrying alcohol 200 metres from a town camp.

He says drivers have been told they face losing their licence plus a $2,000 fine or owners could lose their taxi if the laws are broken.

Mr Habib says it is a complex situation.

"But that's the same thing if you don't pick up the people, the passengers, and they say, well, this is basically discrimination, 'you're not taking us' and it's … another problem, so … the driver might get bashed or get rocks thrown onto the taxi," he said.

Mr Habib says they are seeking clarification from police and the Northern Territory Government.
